February 10, 2011
SAN DIEGO, Feb. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Novatel Wireless (Nasdaq: NVTL), a leading provider of wireless broadband solutions, is pleased to announce that its MiFi® Intelligent Mobile Hotspot preloaded with the MiFi OS™, widgets and application support has been selected as a finalist in the 2011 GSMA Global Mobile Awards for Best Mobile Connected Device (non-handset). The GSMA Global Mobile Awards is the mobile industry's leading annual award presentation that honors excellence and innovation in the mobile communications industry worldwide.
The MiFi platform represents the industry's first Intelligent Mobile Hotspot, a new category of mobile broadband that lets users put their world of content, services and connectivity in the palm of their hand. Unlike existing router solutions that require an external broadband modem and serve only to provide connectivity, the MiFi platform creates a personal cloud of high-speed Internet connectivity and applications that can be easily shared among multiple users and up to five Wi-Fi enabled devices such as laptops, tablets, gaming devices and multimedia players.
"We are delighted and honored that GSMA has chosen the MiFi Intelligent Mobile Hotspot as one of the Best Mobile Connected Devices in this year's competition," said Rob Hadley, CMO, Novatel Wireless. Novatel Wireless won the GSMA Global Mobile Award last year for its first generation MiFi. "As we continue to expand the capabilities of our product line, this industry recognition validates our ongoing commitment to ease-of-use and developing the most advanced intelligent connectivity solutions in the market."
The MiFi device serves as an intelligent platform capable of hosting advanced software applications and flexible enough to address the continued evolution of mobile broadband. With this latest incarnation of the MiFi, Novatel Wireless has reinvented the concept of high-speed wireless access. Leveraging the on-board application platform (MiFi OS™), GPS chipset and removable microSD storage, the MiFi goes beyond basic connectivity offered by competing products, to deliver improved user experience and functionality to the end user. The MiFi OS enables users to have quick access to value-added widgets and applications such as data usage monitoring, SMS, location-based searching and location-based weather.
"Our congratulations go to all the nominees in this year's Global Mobile Awards," said Rob Conway, CEO of the GSMA. "To get down to just 115 nominees across 10 categories, from more than 470 high calibre entries, certainly presented our judges with a tough challenge this year. It is a great achievement to be shortlisted among such a high quality field of entrants and we eagerly anticipate the announcement of the winners on Tuesday 15th February 2011 at the Mobile World Congress and look forward to showcasing another great year of innovation for the mobile industry."
